The Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln has finally opened up about the shocking “Old Man Rick” scene revealed in the Season Eight trailer.

The actor charged with portraying Rick Grimes through 99 episodes of The Walking Dead will return for Episode 100 and beyond next month. The milestone episode, however, will come with the reveal of the mind-boggling moments from the Season Eight trailer which saw Rick Grimes laying in bed, complete with a gray beard, short hair, and a cane by his side. Lincoln was as shocked by the moment as fans, by the sound of it.

“I was shocked and kind of excited by it,” Lincoln said. “My instinct was, ‘What a great storytelling device.’ That was my instinct. I thought it was very interesting, and also gives us an opportunity to do something else a little ahead of the game, which I think is very, very neat.”

As for what’s going on in the scene, Lincoln is mostly tight-lipped. He does, however, tease a certain aspect of its place in The Walking Dead’s timeline. “I mean, it’s a gray Rick,” Lincoln said. “It’s an older Rick. So by virtue of the fact that you see, that means that it’s in the future.”

This only confirms, once again, this is not a dream sequence or Rick Grimes waking up from his coma making the events of the entire series a dream.

“It will become somewhat clearer after the October premiere,” Lincoln promised. “Then again, it may not be. It maybe still is somewhat opaque. I think that that’s possibly all I can say on the matter.”
