Tonight’s episode of Game of Thrones featured the death of two more characters, although most fans probably won’t be too upset that they’re gone.
At the end of this evening’s episode, Euron Greyjoy attacked Daenerys’s fleet, which was led by his niece and nephew Yara and Theon. While both Yara and Theon survived the attack, the Sand Snakes Obara and Nymeria Sand die at the hands of Euron.
The Sand Snakes were the bastard daughters of Oberyn Martell, the charismatic prince of Dorne who died at the hands of Gregor “the Mountain” Clegaine back in season four. Although the Sand Snakes weren’t major characters, they played a role in the deaths of Myrcella Baratheon and helped Ellaria Sand (Oberyn’s paramour) take over Dorne last season.
For reference, Obara is the Sand Snake that uses a spear, while Nymeria is the Sand Snake the prefers a whip. Both, rather ironically, were murdered by Euron using their own weapons of choice.
Only one Sand Snake survived the attack, although she’s now a captive of Euron along with Ellaria Sand. Tyene Sand, the Sand Snake who flirted with Bronn in season five, is still alive and probably on the way to King’s Landing, where Cersei probably has a deadly revenge in store for her role in the death of her daughter Myrcella. If Bronn is still in King’s Landing, there’s still a chance he might repay Tyene for saving his life back in season five.
Of course, its not a surprise that Nymeria Sand didn’t survive this season of Game of Thrones. The actress that played Nymeria, Jessica Henwick, is one of the stars of Iron Fist and will even have a larger role next season.
These are the first character deaths in Game of Thrones this season, although we’re guessing they’re far from the last.
