The Flash fans were shocked when last week’s episode, “I Know Who You Are,” revealed that the villain Savitar was actually Barry Allen from the future. However, it turns out fans were warned about this turn, and they were warned by Barry himself.

The warning came during the “Invasion” crossover story in the fall, which brought together cast members from Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow. During the crossover, time traveler Rip Hunter received a message from a future Barry Allen warning Rip not to trust anyone in the future, including Barry himself.

This warning is connected to the Savitar reveal, and that won’t go unmentioned on The Flash.

“Someone does point out that suddenly that message makes a lot of sense,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg tells Entertainment Weekly.

In the next episode of The Flash, “Cause and Effect,” Barry (Grant Gustin) takes drastic measures to stop Savitar. Meanwhile, H.R. (Tom Cavanagh) continues to push Tracy Brand (guest star Anne Dudek) to design the trap for Savitar and Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) returns with an interesting proposal.

“Cause and Effect” is directed by David McWhirter from a script by Judalina Neira & Lauren Certo.

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
