There were lots of rumors floating around about a certain bow and arrow-wielding Avenger appearing in next year’s Marvel team-up film Ant-Man and the Wasp (whew, that’s a lot of hyphens).

We get the desire to see Hawkeye appearing in the sequel to Ant-Man, especially after their awesome team up in Captain America: Civil War and that infamous shot scene.

Unfortunately, such a cameo from Jeremy Renner doesn’t seem to be in the cards for the Marvel Studios movie, according to the film’s director.

Peyton Reed, who is returning to helm the continued adventures of Hope Van Dyne and Scott Lang, tweeted that the Avenger will not be appearing in the sequel.

The Russians are swarm-tweeting that Hawkeye is in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP. #FakeNews

Reed probably has a better idea of who will be in his film than most. And though he could be attempting some misdirection in order to preserve a surprise in the film, it doesn’t serve his cause to even acknowledge something unsubstantiated. The fact that he just outright called it Fake News seems to indicate that it is just that.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is in pre-production and is set to start shooting in Atlanta later this summer. Avengers: Infinity War recently wrapped filming in Atlanta and is now shooting in Scotland before coming back to the States for shooting in New York City.

With it being so early in the big Marvel Studios crossover’s production, and before film on Ant-Man and the Wasp has even begun rolling, we’re going to have to take the director’s word at this point. But we wouldn’t mind seeing Hawkeye re-team with his ole’ buddy Ant-Man and meet the new Wasp along the way.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is scheduled to hit theaters on July 6, 2018.
