The last we saw King Ezekiel on The Walking Dead, he was fresh off of gazing into Carol’s eyes having opened himself up to her and revealed his true identity.

In the weeks since, both he and Carol were largely absent from the first half of The Walking Dead’s seventh season. Carol popped up later, hiding out in her new house with Morgan stopping by for a moment but this scene was more telling than it may have appeared at first. Morgan is fully aware of some sort of relationship which has grown between Carol and Ezekiel — as indicated by his suspicion of him supplying her with fruit.

Fans of Robert Kirkman’s comic books are beginning to expect Carol to fill the comic book role of Michonne for the television adaptation, seeing as Michonne and Ezekiel developed a romantic relationship after being heavily reserved when talking to other people.

As for King Ezekiel actor Khary Payton, he’s not so sure. Speaking to Comicbook.com in an exclusive interview ahead of The Walking Dead’s midseason 7 premiere, Payton offered his perspective on the Carol/Ezekiel relationship.

“Man, I don’t know,” Payton admits. “I honestly don’t know. That woman is hard to read. I know that Ezekiel likes her. I’m not sure how much he likes her. I think Ezekiel likes a challenge more than anything. Carol is definitely a challenge, but I honestly can’t tell which way it’s going to go. She’s a tough nut to crack.”

We will likely see more of Carol’s effects on Ezekiel when The Walking Dead returns on Sunday night as he’ll return to possibly aid Rick in his impending war with Negan and the Saviors. Should Carol and Ezekiel be a thing on the series? Or do the fans still want to hold out for a little flame between Carol and Daryl Dixon?
